a modest celebration (yesterday in baseball history)

I came across this picture a couple of weeks ago, and then noticed yesterday that it was the anniversary of Rickey Henderson stealing his 893rd base, surpassing Ty Cobb as the American League’s all-time base thief.

This picture, though, is from when he passed Lou Brock on the list, with steal 939, which happened on May first of 1991. Here, Rickey humbly acknowledges the applause of the crowd.

Rickey was one of the best of all time. He went on to steal 1406 total bases, which is, perhaps the career record that will never be broken. In addition he was caught stealing 335 times, also a major league record, and scored 2,295 runs, which is also the all-time record. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot, getting 94.8% of the vote. (Of 294 members of the hall, only 44 players were elected on the first ballot.)
