Apparently there’s no truth to the story that the Senators or the Yankees once gave Fidel a tryout, but scout Joe Cambria worked in Cuba for the Senators, sent them a lot of Cuban players, and, according to SABR’s BioProject, Cambria did take a look at Castro when Fidel was at the University of Havana:
Cambria scouted Castro as a pitcher at the University of Havana, noting that he had a decent curve but not much of a fastball.
