Honus Wagner, born this date in 1874, 140 years ago, in Chartiers, Pennsylvania, six miles or so from downtown Pittsburgh (now part of the borough of Carnegie). Hans played in the National League with the Pirates from 1900 to 1917, won eight batting titles, and led the league in stolen bases five times. Most people think of Honus as the greatest shortstop ever to play the game.
Honus was one of the five charter members of the Hall of fame, selected in 1936, along with Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson.
He passed away on 6 December 1955.
Good game, Honus
